I've never been far away (for long), and visited regularly, but I'm back in my old stomping grounds--maybe for good. Now I'd like to become really familiar with what other Hounds think are the culinary highlights of Skagit County. There are many new places to join my old haunts, but I lack the patience and the purse to just sample willy-nilly.

It doesn't need to be haute cuisine or even aspirational of it. Best Mexican? Excellent teriyaki? Best wine list? Best Happy Hours? Surprisingly good pizza? Dependable mussels? Somewhere that carries unusual, tasty draft beers from around the world? Who uses fresh local beef or makes their own sausage?

I'll go first with a recent nugget: House of Seafood in WSIR (Wide Spot in Road) Allen. This is a newish Thai place, sharing a location with Samish Gold Seafood, successor(?) to venerable Blau Oyster Co. On our first visit, Wahine and I had our standard first test of a Thai place, Pad Thai, and took a flyer on Thai crab fried rice (How could we not, with the seafood market next door?). The Pad Thai was excellent, just not my style; I like my PT drier and less sweet. The crab fried rice, however was beyond excellent, stellar. And very generous with what was clearly fresh, sweet Dungeness. By chance two days later, I met a gent who said he lunches at House of Seafood at least once a week, and he raved about their ceviche. Next time, it'll be that and our standard second test, Pad See Ew and our third, Tom Ka Gai.

OK, whatcha got in Skagit?
