A sandwich board on the sidewalk promoting organic butternut squash soup lured me to this tiny cafe. Open for only a week, it's in the spot formerly occupied by the take-out cubbyhole, Cafe Merenda.

The counterman was extremely harried. I soon found out why --- the owner had to leave for old country so the few Russian items on the menu, except for the piroshki made by Paramount, were not available. Neither was the butternut squash soup. But no matter, I was content with a cup of soothing cream of tomato and red pepper soup, accompanied by two slices of toasted baguette.

The counterman recommended the smoked salmon sandwich next time, and gave me a coupon for a free soda or coffee with sandwich purchase. Ingredients are organic when possible, and the menu promises vegan and vegetarian treats as well.
