Siam Orchid in Orinda

Healthy Eater | Apr 22, 2005 03:51 PM

The restaurant had been remodeled beautifully. We were surprised by the new and higher prices but, initially, the ambience seemed to make up for it. We ordered Ginger Salad (9.95) and Sauteed Boneless Duck with Special Dipping Sauce (12.95). The Ginger Salad was disappointing. While the ginger was fresh, the coconut meat, fava beans, and fried onions were dried-kind of what you get out of a package of trail mix. The rest of the salad was iceberg lettuce and raw onion slices. When we tasted the Sauteed Boneless Duck with Special Dipping Sauce, we were even more disappointed. The duck was fatty and chewy. The spinach, broccoli and dipping sauce were fine, but overshadowed by the poor quality of the duck. For the price, I would have expected higher quality duck. In addition, whenever we asked our server questions about the dishes, we were referred to a higher up who was not able to answer either.

When we left, we concluded that the remodeled Siam Orchid is a great restaurant to sit in if you only want ambience, but not a good restaurant to eat at or be served.
