Shrimp Ceviche - Cook Shrimp First?

I was looking at some shrimp ceviche recipes and they all call for cooking the shrimp either by boiling for a minute or two or by steaming. I know that traditional ceviche is made by marinating seafood in some kind of acidic liquid which "cooks" the seafood. Is cooking the shrimp at all traditional, or did some lawyer look at those recipes and say, "Cook those shrimp!!"

I'm also thinking that unless you know for a fact that your shrimp are fresh beyond reproach, that cooking them for a bit probably isn't a bad idea anyway.
