Short Review: Santoka Ramen, Torrance

Das Ubergeek | Mar 11, 2006 03:44 PM

I had to go to Torrance today (was in immediate need of spices which necessitated a trip to Penzey's) and so I decided to stop at Mitsuwa Marketplace on the way back for Japanese foodstuffs and lunch.

In the little food court are six or seven places serving food -- curry, combo plates, omerice, ramen, etc. Most of the places have a "C" rating (including the sushi place -- ew.). Given that I had never eaten there before, that put me off. Santoka had a B, though, so I dove in.

I ordered combo #54 -- a small bowl of shio (salt) ramen, rice with leeks, and a flavoured egg. It was the best, most satisfying Japanese meal I've had in a long time. The ramen was FABULOUS, the rice was perfect, and the tea egg was a nice little hit of protein. $7.50 (the same combo with the larger bowl of ramen is $8.50) and it was more than I could eat.

If you end up in the Mitsuwa marketplace, stop at Santoka and get ramen. It's perfect on a cold day like today.

Note: none of the places in the Mitsuwa marketplace do takeout, so you'll have to eat in. There are plenty of tables.
