Shopsin's: I don't get the appeal!

I just went there for lunch, my second visit, and I was again disappointed. The menu seems very expensive, difficult to get much for less than $9 or $10 (at lunch!). Last time I had ordered the lunch special of soup and sandwich (merguez sausage with tzatiski sauce) and the soup was only ok and they did nothing to the sausage (it was just grilled and slapped on a bun). But I decided I ordered wrong. So I went back today, decided to go for the chicken tortilla avocado soup since people seemed to rave about it. The chicken was grilled which was nice but it was completely burnt and the burnt flavor seeped throughout the soup. The broth itself had little flavor, except for my 1-2 bites with cilantro.

I want to like this place, I really liked my waitress, I like the vibe, I like the candy -- but I am not liking the food.

Am I still ordering wrong? I plan to try the slutty pancakes but its hard to justify $13.95 for pancakes. Chowhounds, please tell me what I am doing wrong!!
