Shipley Do-nuts

My family and I encountered Shipley Do-nuts during a recent visit to Hattiesburg, MS. I thought it was a really local two-location do-nut shop never to be found outside this town. Well, looks can be deceiving, subsequent check of their website, I understand this is a regional franchise.

The shop we visited had formica tables and a look of sensible been here forever look about it. Even the exterior signage had a vintage 50's look. The open kitchen allowed you to see the donuts being produced, cooled and glazed. The sugar smell just clung to air.

We ordered three glazed do-nuts, then bought a number of singles. One do-nut which impressed me was the chocolate glazed with walnut pieces sprinkled on top for 55 cents! I would have expected peanuts, then very likely taken a pass. I enjoyed the apple fritter, which was fine eating until I came across a streak of apple pie-ish filling. Doing so well, until the pie filling. The girls enjoyed the sugar twist and the cinnamon twist butterfly do-nuts.

Shortly after we sat down to eat, the store manager offered us gratis a ham and cheese as well as a sausage Kolachies. Is this of Polish origin? Anyway, they were the speedway to messy clothes with melted cheese spilling out. Additionally, they were not very good. I will also venture to guess they were not freshly made in-house.

Stick to the do-nuts!

P.S. I may later transfer the image to another server. When I do, I will link to it.
