99 bottles of beer on the wall... and one dumped on my leg.
Yes, I had waaaay too many beers with Taka last night, formerly of Sushi Itto and the only reason to go there, and he dumped one on my knee for good measure. Consider it a friend cristening. He, however, is moving to Torrance and is currently working in Culver City (you lucky LA Hounds). I'll have to get the name of the place.
So on Thursday I stopped for lunch at Shiki in Orange again. Shiki is right off of the 55 at Katella and you can see the rough looking building and sign while on the freeway. It isn't easy to find, being behind the Chevron station and in the HoJo parking lot, but the lunch box is pretty darned good and a steal at seven bucks.
The restaurant changed ownership a year ago and the inside is completely remodeled. They kept the teppan tables, brightened up the room and added a sushi bar.
I had to try a bit of sushi with my box lunch, right?
I ordered toro, which I think is an instant give away at quality. Now here is where I'm perplexed. The toro was VERY good and VERY expensive ($10) but the ginger was not a Japanese style, but rather, Chinese (white instead of pink with a different flavor and texture completely).
Now I know it was purchased by a Jewish man and his daughter (I met him there once) out of Villa Park (Stanpage is the corp name that holds the DBA of Shiki), but I wonder if he is making a serious push for the sushi business. Has anyone done only sushi at Shiki?
