My family and I are planning a brief visit in Montreal towards the end of this week. At the moment we think we may stay in an area I don't know, on Lincoln a few blocks from the corner of Atwater & Sherbrooke. Is there anything gastronomically interesting in that neighborhood? The only landmark that comes to mind is the Atwater Market, but that looks to be about a mile and a half away on foot, 20 minutes. Given traffic, I guess it could take almost as long by car.
Closer by, within a few minutes of the corner with Sherbrooke are there any recommendations for eating and food shopping?
What are the favorites at the Atwater Market? I usually go to Jean Talon, but since I am in this neightborhood, I thought the AM would be worth a try. Since we will be driving back to the States, there are limits as to what produce we can buy. The butcheries of Atwater are not practical. Is there anything remotely approaching the Marche des Saveurs? Does Atwater Mkt. have anyone selling Quebec maple syrup at $3 to $4 a can, as in Jean-Talon? Are we past the tire d'erable season -- is that maple taffy in English? Or might there be some hold-outs in one or the other of the markets? Does any AM fromagerie compare to Hamel?
