Went into The Chieftain Bar and Restaurant down here in SOMA one lunchtime, and ate their shepherd's pie at the bar. I'm always interested in finding a good example to satisfy this recurrent craving of mine, and was quite dissapointed with this one. Though the dish itself was edible and filling, and the portion large, the potatoes were too salty and tasted a little on the elderly side. I was alarmed at this -- when did they make them? I was eating at 11:45am! But the big dissapointment was that it was made with ground beef! Alas, I'll make them at home until I can find a good purveyor of lamb or mutton shepherd's pie. Any chowhounds know where I can find this delicious, humble fare?
