Shanghai Restaurant in Charlotte - Closing Soon

If you like Shanghai (in the Quail Corners shopping center on Park Rd. at Sharon Rd. W), go there soon. They are closing at the end of the month, most likely the 26th or so. Crosland, owner and manager of the shopping center, have for some reason decided to demolish the whole center and rebuild. Doesn't really make sense to me as its one of the few strips in town that have consistently been fully (or nearly so) leased. I understand the idea of growth and maximizing retail space for profit, but "if it ain't broke don't fix it". There are quite a few locally-owned businesses that are neigborhood staples like Shanghai and Rustys Deli. I won't go further into my personal feelings about Crosland's decision as that isn't very Chowish...

I don't know the fate of Rustys yet, but I know that as of now Shanghai will not be reopening. There is an address book to sign if you want to be notified if and when they decide to reopen. If you've ever eaten here, chances are you've dealt with the owners Alex and Tammi. They are 2 of the nicest, most genuine people you could meet, and have always shown great hospitality and accommodation to their customers. If you ate there twice, chances are Alex would remember you and what you like. I can't say enough about them and their family. Then of course there is the food. It is Chinese-American for the most part, with a few non-standard dishes sprinkled throughout. I like it because it is not your standard greasy fare, and they use fresh ingredients. They also offer an extensive vegetarian menu, and will customize meat-based dishes with a vegetarian analogue like tofu or gluten. IMO, the only place in town that compares is 88 China Bistro.

If you can't tell, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte. I've been eating there since they first opened 10 years ago. I wrestled for the last week or so over whether or not to post this, but you almost never get advance notice of a restaurant closing and I felt it should be known. If you are a fan, or just like *good* Chinese-American food, please give them a visit before its too late.
