My family and I had dinner at Shanghai House last weekend and I wanted to share our experience.
We arrived around 6:30 and were seated immediately. Placed on the table for us were four menus that appeared to be identical, but because of CH tips I checked and found them to be three Cantonese-American menus and one Shanghainese menu. We ordered xiao long bao, pan fried hand-cut noodles with pork and vegetables, golden sauteed prawns, green beans, and steamed rice for two.
To my surprise, the dishes came out quite quickly. First to arrive were some of the most attractive xiao long bao I have ever seen. I believe there were ten in the order. They were quite small, with the thin wrapper meticulously folded around the delicious pork filling. My only complaint is that there was not much, if any, soup on the inside. None of the wrappers had torn, either. Each dumpling had a little chimney/vent at the top where all the pleats came together, so my guess is that the soup might have evaporated. But that's only a guess.
Next up were the golden sauteed prawns and the green beans. The prawns were excellent, presented whole, in their shells, in a brownish sauce that was only slightly sweet. My oldest daughter was a little freaked out by the fact that we were eating them heads and all, but loved the sauce and applied it liberally to her rice. The green beans were your standard well-cooked green beans--crisp and garlicky.
The hand-cut noodles with pork and vegetables came out last, but by this time we still had everything but the xiao long bao on the table. This was outstanding. I had never had hand-cut noodles before and was (and still am) amazed at the great chewy texture they had. The pork and vegetables complemented them well (vegetables were mainly cabbage and bean sprouts if I remember correctly), but it was the noodles that really stood out. My girls really chowed down on this dish.
This was plenty of food for two adults and two children (there were no leftovers, but we were all full and happy at the end) and the whole dinner ran us a whopping $27.00 before tax and tip.
