First of all the Chinese only menu is gone, It has now been translated into English. This would be a good thing, if it did not coincide with a DRASTIC dip in quality I experienced last night. In my experience Shanghai Cafe has been very consistent, I always order the same dishes every time. This was not the case last night. The "hundred leaves knotted bbq meat", which has now been translated as stewed pork with tofu skin in brown sauce or something like that, was DREADFUL. The sauce was anemic, way too oily and underflavored. The tofu skin, which has always been expertly braided into pretzel shape and retained a bite was just thrown in and cooked to the consistency of mush. To top it off the pork belly was not up to par either. This dish which had previously been a showcase for the restaurant last night was an epic fail. I could chalk this up to a change in kitchen staff, or some chefs having last night off, but the soup dumplings were different too!!!!!!!!!! They were not filled with as much soup as usual and appeared thrown together in a more amateurish way, some were quite lopsided. My experience last night has opened the door for me to try 456 Shanghai, which famed internet food personality Eddie Huang has lauded as his favorite.
