On the positive review in the Chronicle, I decided to give this a try for lunch. Was a bit long a commute for me from work, but was really craving something a little more special than a gyro from Milto’s (there’s a gyro place just across the way on Burnet but I never really liked them).
It’s in a very non-descript little strip mall. Inside is warm enough with a few posters on the walls. There was one other customer in there. Both the man and woman who helped me were very courteous and helpful. The paper menu at the door advertised a free appetizer with entrée so I chose:
Maast-o-Khiar Diced cucumbers mixed in yogurt with mint $3.49
Chelo Kabab Barg One skewer of marinated steak, charbroiled, served with grilled tomato on a bed of fluffy basmati rice $10.99 (subbed pita for the rice)
Meal arrived quickly and smelled very good in the car on the way back to work. Meat and tomato had nice grilled flavor, however the meat was a bit dry (easily fixed with the yogurt sauce). I strongly believe the pita bread was from Phoenicia, and I find their pita bread kind of dry and lifeless. Was it tasty? Yes. Would I go back? Yes, if it was very close to work. Am I going crave it enough to make it a destination? Probably not, but would recommend it to anyone in the area.
