Went to Ruby Foo's last night and have to say I was for
the most part disappointed. First of all, wasn't too
crazy about the place. It was huge and crowded and had
a real theme restaurant feel to it. Felt like I was at
a Planet Hollywood or something like that, and the
crowd seemed really touristy as well.
For appetizers, we (me and my girlfriend) had the
tamarind glazed spareribs and the steamed bbq duck
dumplings. I thought the duck dumplings were lame, but
maybe that's because a couple weeks ago I had peking
duck at maple garden beijing duck house (which was very
good i might add, crispy on the outside, flavorful on
the inside). if the duck inside the dumplings had been
like the spareribs, they would have been much better.
instead, it was a not too flavorful pasty filling. the
spareribs i have to say were excellent though. crispy
on the outside and meaty on the inside. the best part
was how easily the meat came off the bone. i can't
stand when you get ribs and you're knawing at all this
cartilage and end up getting nothing out of it. the
sauce was very good too, except a tad sweet.
for entrees, we had the green curry chicken and the 3
flavor crispy whole fish. both were pretty good
actually. the broth in the chicken was flavorful, and
the crispy whole fish was well prepared. but here's
the thing: you can get either of these dishes at just
about every thai restaurant in the world, and they'll
be just as good, if not better, and half the price.
i mean, i just don't see the point of going to ruby
foo's if you can't get anything there that you wouldn't
be able to get anywhere else. i went there to get
something different, something original, instead, i
felt like i was at a department store for asian
restaurant food. it was like, in this corner we have
chinese food, in this corner we have sushi, and in that
corner we have thai food. whatever, man. perhaps my
girlfriend summed it up best when she said, "this would
taste a lot better if we were at an authentic place."
but back to the food. for our side, we got the
pineapple chicken fried rice, which also is available
at most thai restaurants. this was probably the worst
dish of the night. it didn't have much flavor, it
didn't do anything for either of us, and i don't even
think it was fried.
by the way, if you want a great thai restaurant to go
to for pla lad prig (crispy whole fish) and curry
chicken and thai fried rice, go to thai cuisine in
ithaca, new york. (getaways for gourmets rated it the
best thai in new york state, including new york city,
and i agree with them). they have the best pla lad
prig, chicken with green curry, beef with red curry,
tom yong goong and thai fried rice i've ever had,
desserts at least were a little better. i got the
raspberry passion fruit parfait and my girlfriend got
the chocolate banana torte. i love just about anything
with passion fruit, so i was very happy with my
dessert, although i didn't think the raspberry combo
worked all that well. the chocolate banana torte was
tasty and rich, and way too big for one person.
finally, service was very good, surprisingly,
considering the size of the place.
well, that's my take. i'd recommend going there for
desserts and appetizers, but not much else unless you
want to get ripped off. sorry this was written in such
a hurry, but i've gotta go to lunch. talk to you all
