Shaan is back, on E. 53rd

Some of you may remember Shaan, an Indian restaurant near Rockefeller Center that closed a number of years ago. It was one of the best Indian buffets in the neighborhood at the time. Last week I noticed that a restaurant called Shaan, same logo as in the past, has replaced the dreaded Baluchi's on 53rd between 2nd & 3rd, so I stopped in today for the $11.95 lunch buffet. I asked the waiter if there was any connection to the old Shaan, and he said it was the same chef. It was OK, but I think Chola and Darbar Grill are better buffet bets for the neighborhood.

The non veg dishes were tandoori chicken, tikka masala and a shrimp mushroom curry in a cream sauce. I think there were 5 veg dishes plus salad and chaat. They bring a basket of naan to the table. Desserts were rice pudding and carrot halwa.

I also wonder whether Baluchi's may be bankrolling this, as they had done in the past with Devi, before Saran & Mathur broke off the relationship due alleged unscrupulous labor practices.
