SF Hound Moved to NYC as a Columbia Grad Student -- Recs?

Cyrus J. Farivar | Aug 11, 2004 10:53 AM

Greetings, I'm a recently displaced SF/Berkeley hound who is now a Columbia grad student (journalism) looking for great and cheap chow within walking distance of campus. I know about the Hungarian pastry shop on Amsterdam and have been told to get black and whites at Nussbaum & Wu's, and about Absolute Bagels on 110th St. -- beyond that, what do people recommend? Any particular hot dog stand that's amazing? Pizza?

Also, I've been assigned (as all Columbia journos are) a neighborhood in NYC to cover -- mine is Crown Heights. Any particularly great chow out there? I'm up for anything. All I know is that there are West Indians, Hasidic Jews, African-Americans, and Guyanese/Surinamese and their Chinese fusions that I was reading up on.

And I think I also need to make a pilgrimage out to Tontonno's and Lombardi's for pizza.
