I'll be spending a week with my family on the Big Island, and would love some recommendations for where to eat.
Jan 2-4 in Volcano
Jan 4-8 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Kohala Coast
Good food is the top concern; hole-in-the-wall places with no decor or atmosphere are fine as long as the food is great. Price range is anywhere from cheapo to $30/person (for a couple nights, maybe).
We're more interested in experiencing the best of the local bounty (seafood, fresh produce, you tell me!) rather than fancy european-style places that could just as easily be in a big city somewhere. Although if there's somewhere like that that's just too good to miss, let me know.
So, what are the local specialties on the big island? Where to we absolutely have to eat? What are locals' favorites in those areas.
