Just spent a too-short weekend in the city. Thanks much for tips on Memphis Minnie's and Toronado, which were both great. Also ate at Chow on Church, which was ok, nice idea but food was average. Had tapas at the place next to Ty Couz, very tasty. On Sunday, I looked in at the new gelato place in Berkeley. It brought tears to my eyes, although I was too full to try it. Then I filled up the car with provisions from the Berkeley Bowl and drove back to L.A. to fret about the sorry state of our chowdom down here. Mainly I was impressed by the low prices and attention to good ingredients, both of which are absent in L.A. except at small ethnic places.
