Settle a debate about food in Flushing.

So, i was taken by someone to flushing for "hot pot" on 2 occasions. The first time we went to the new world mall food court, and got this from LaoMa MaLaTang: http://s3-media3.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphot... The second time we went to the golden mall, to moms hot and numbing heat, and we got these http://newyork.seriouseats.com/images...

For starters, i'm 99% sure hot pot is where you cook the food yourself in a pot of hot liquid put in front of you on the table. But then she said, well, they are the same thing, just 2 different places, and asked me which one i liked better. (She cited her brothers chinese girlfriend as a source, saying she said its the same dish.)

These seem so different to me, i'm not sure how anyone can think they are the same. At most, it would be the same way french fries and potato latkes are both fried potatoes.

Am i crazy, or are these two different things entirely?
