Service when eating alone

ncfooddog | Dec 21, 2005 03:04 PM

I was wondering if others get the same treatment. I travel alone on business and refuse to eat in the hotel. I go to very upscale restaurants, usually ranked in top 20 in the city and eat solo at a table. I also do not drink, but order sparkling water. I notice that the quality of service is SIGNIFICANTLY below the surrounding tables. It goes so far that sometimes when I am asked by the waiter how everything is, I respond "not bad" or "could be much better." The waiter normally responds "very good" or "thank you" and move on. My bill still comes to $60+. Am i now supposed to leave a first class tip for second class service?
