Servers who pick up dishes but not flatware between courses: was I rude to bring this up?

middleagedfoodie | Dec 7, 201406:43 AM

We went to a moderately priced BYOB, not a chain. I had placed my knife on my appetizer plate when I finished the course. When the server came to pick up the plates, she removed my knife and set it on the tablecloth. This startled me and I said to my husband, unfortunately, loud enough for the server to hear, "this is unacceptable". Of course, she immediately picked up the knife. The couple we were with thought I was being snobby, as did my husband. I find the thought of putting used flatware on a table, let alone a tablecloth, tacky. I should have just said to the server, please bring me a fresh knife. But what are your thoughts on servers doing this when the entrees are say in the $20 - $30 range?
