Señor Mango

I've driven by this place probably a million times...okay, a few thousand times at least...but never stopped. It was too late for lunch, but still way too early for happy hour and I was hungry. Yesterday I happened to be driving by yet again; there was a parking space almost in front so I decided to stop and get a snack.

Señor Mango is a smoothie, fruit salad, torta joint on 30th between Adams and (I think) Monroe, just know it's a few doors south of Jaynes Gastropub. It's small, nondescript and relatively clean, or at least cleaner than Fruitlandia. The menu is painted on the inside wall opposite the ordering station and semi-open kitchen where you can watch women furiously chopping heaps of fruit. I decided on the Escamocha for $4.75, and I have to say it was worth every penny.

What I got was a 16 oz smoothie glass filled nearly to the brim with finely chopped fruit. Yesterday it included apples, oranges, banana, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew and mango. Once the cup was filled they poured a sauce over the top that tasted suspiciously like diluted sweetened condensed milk. It was not cloyingly sweet at all and by the time I ate to the bottom of the cup it had turned into a pretty delicious fruity/milky nectar. After the sauce, a generous topping of finely chopped almonds and shredded coconut went on, along with the lid.

It was the perfect snack...light and refreshing. Not too sweet but just sweet enough to satisfy and the fruit was ripe. Turned out to be just what I was craving on one of those really gorgeous, warm but not too hot, pre-summer days.

I probably wouldn't drive halfway across the county just to try an escamocha, fruit salad or smoothie at Señor Mango, but if you're any where near Normal Heights or 30th & Adams, it's worth stopping in for something fruity.
