Semi sun-dried tomatoes

David Purdy | Oct 13, 2003 05:02 PM

Hi all,

I am in pursuit of semi sun-dried tomatoes. My aunt, living in Dublin, Ireland, has been raving about them for months. I live in Northern California, and have called all of the local places: Draegers, Dean and Deluca, Whole Foods, Oakville Grocery, and more, including Italian food importers. All with no luck.

I have seen some websites mention these in places like the UK, Australia, and NYC, but still can't find where I can buy them locally. I'll be visiting NYC in 2 weeks, and will follow any leads. Any suggestions? Or, are there any suggestions for DC? Naturally, any California recommendations will be considered golden, but that's a tall challenge, I think.

If you're familiar with them, here are some questions:

1: What, precisely, is the difference between semi sun-dried tomatoes and regular sun-dried tomatoes?

2: Are these a new thing? My aunt said they started appearing in the better markets around the beginning of the year, and now appear in the more common groceries (i.e. equivalent to Safeway).

3: Where are they made? I get the impression from assorted websites that Italy and Australia are two sources.

4: Can anyone can name an importer? If so, I can forward this info to local markets, some of whom seem to employ Chow Hounds...

Thanks a million!

Ps. This is my first post here, and I tried posting this earlier but my browser crashed several times. As far as I can tell it wasn't posted, though my apologies if there is some snafu.
