As a budding food-lover (at my tender 19 years of age), I'm eager to learn about all the great opportunities for culinary pleasure in the San Francisco area, but I quite honestly don't know where to begin, and I'm having trouble discerning the "really, you MUST go there" suggestions from the common retort I get from some San Fran locals (who assume I'm a tourist), the "I'm just going to give you a name of a place just to get you out of my hair" answer.
Do any of you have suggestions of where to start out my culinary ventures, so that I may find my love of San Francisco food the right way, instead of on the tourist track? I'm really open to anything and everything; I'm an adventurous eater, however my budget needs suggestions that are easy on the pocketbook, but incredibly delicious and not-to-be-missed
More urgently, I've finally convinced my family to round-up a 4-day, 3-night stay in the city so we can try and familiarize ourselves with everything (plus, my mother will get the chance to give me the all too familiar San Fran landmark and tourist destination tour, so that I may one day give said tour to all non-resident visitors and friends who want a "local" tour of the city).
We're staying around the Fisherman's Warf/Chinatown area, and I would love suggestions for some awesomes places around there as well.
(I would particularly appreciate an opinion on a good seafood restaurant, as well as a good Dim Sum restaurant. I heard Hong Kong Lounge was a good place to start for an experience that isn't too overwhelming?)
