I would love to track down 2 amazing dishes
I ate in northern Laos. I have never had
anything like them elsewhere--can they be
found in NYC?
1. A light vegetable stew seasoned with marijuana,
anise and who knows what else. It was unworldly--
highly aromatic, very good, and unlike anything
else I ate in Lao. What WAS this? Ring any bells?
2. I might have better luck finding jiao bong
(the closest spelling I can muster), a heavenly,
very hot paste of dried red peppers and smoked
buffalo skin, eaten as a condiment with sticky
rice. It was AMAZING--after having it once, I
went through great lengths to get back to that
town to have more, and would happily do it
again. Any leads?
From the posts below on Lao food, prospects look
bleak--are chowhounds ready to concede that all
of NYC has utterly failed us?
