For some reason, the SALTED version of cultured butter has disappeared from the shelves – unsalted is in good supply.
The usual product was by Lactantia (price typically $6.99 for a lb; $7.19 in sticks) which I’ve been getting from Fiesta Farms for years – all their other products are still available. My occasional backup was the Loblaws ‘Normandy Style’ (salted) – which has also disappeared.
I’m not averse to paying more for a premium product Société-Orignal (from Quebec) was a superb product, (and worth $7.99 for 250gm) but it was discontinued (I used to get it at Stasis on Roncesvalles – also closed).
There are some ‘expensively packaged’ (and priced) products out there but priced dramatically higher (up to 13.99 for 250 gm) – but the ones I’ve tried are indistinguishable (to me) from the ‘regular’ Lactantia which is a fraction of the price.
I’ve tried both Chagnon – OK but not at that price; and Cows Creamery – also priced too high for the quality provided.
Can anyone help me find the Lactantia Cultured Salted – or a similar product at a ‘fair price’?
In the interim, I’m sprinkling Maldon salt on my Lactantia Unsalted Cultured.
After preparing the above I checked the Lactantia website.
Indeed the ‘My Country’ SALTED versions are no longer listed (the unsalted are). BUT there is a ‘new’ product line of ‘European Style’ Butter – Salted which has the same butter-fat content; the same colour foil package – except it is now only 250gm (instead of the previous 454 gm).
This looks like the identical product to my sceptical eye – except the size has dropped from 454 to 250gm – so should sell for around $3.85 on an equivalent weight basis. As I haven’t found it (yet) I don’t know what price is intended.
But if anyone sees this please let me know (I’m located midtown but will travel for food).
