My favorite cheese in the world (& hedonistic pleasure) is called torta basilica or basil torte. It's basically layers of mascarpone, gorgonzola, pesto & whole pine nuts. I first found it in Milan (where it originates) & when living as a poor poor au pair in Munich (albeit w/ a college degree), would scrape my pfennigs together just to get 100 grams of this delicious stuff. Finally, it came to America & Bristol Farms & Gelsons used to carry it, especially around the holidays. Unfortunately, for ages, the only place you could find it was at the Beverly Hills Cheese store, quite a haul from the OC. Recently strolled into my local Gelson's (Newport) & checked out the cheese display, always my first stop. Lo and behold, my beloved torta basilica, named basil torte! Can't remember the last time I was so excited (pretty sad, huh?!). Anyway, they are now carrying it, though with great apprehensions as it goes bad very quickly & rather expensive stuff to throw out. This also does not have the pine nuts in it, so I throw some roasted ones on with fresh chopped basil for a festive look when serving. I would greatly appreciate it if my fellow local cheese-lover hounds would check it out & make a purchase, all while praising the cheese procurer effusively for stocking it. Not too much to ask? I'm trying to do my part, but 1 chunk a week is all my waistline & heart can handle. Any assistance greatly appreciated to keep this orgiastic stuff in stock.
P.S. While I'm at it, please also support the lovely Picnics Deli on 17th in Costa Mesa - I think they are really hurting & so deserve to be successful with their wonderful food & cheeses and great care they put into customer service. Unfortunately, not a great location.
