why do scallops taste metallic?

A few times, I've been sadly surprised to find scallops that I've ordered arrive looking delicious but end up having a distinct metallic taste that makes them (to my mind) inedible.

I tried to Google it but couldn't find anything about it. Do any 'hounds know what causes this phenomenon and how to avoid it?
