Savory items at Anna's Bakery in SF Chinatown?

nja | Apr 1, 2004 07:28 PM

Anyone have any experience with or comments on the eats at Anna Bakery?

Thanks to ChowFun Derek, it's my source for a respectable egg tart for when a walk to Golden Gate is too far (though I've learned to keep walking when the ones at Anna have liquid pooling up on their surface). The almond cookies are not bad, but not very good either. An apple turnover of some sort was awful.

But last time I was in there, after having just eaten lunch, I noticed several things that intrigued me. First was an item that looked like a scallion angel food cake roll coated in a brown, scraggly fuzz that looked like, umm... shredded burlap! Another was the fact that the place was full of Asians eating and apparently greatly enjoying their lunches that were assembled from the various pies, buns, and other savory items. Finally, the walls were covered in, presumably, menus and specials lists written entirely in Chinese characters. In fact I couldn't see an English menu of any sort anywhere in the place, and only a couple of the sweet bakery items had English signs.

Any recommendations?
