So I thought it would be both thrifty and tasty to use the syrup left over from macerating pitted fresh sour cherries with sugar to flavor some vodka for later use in cocktails. A tribute to my Russian forebears, maybe. So I mixed the syrup with some Grey Goose vodka (roughly equal amounts) and what I seem to have created is a near-perfect analogue of Robitussin. Seriously. Expensive, farmstand cherry-flavored Robitussin. It's horrid.

However, I am trying to think of this as the starting point, not an ending, so what do people suggest? More vodka? I'll do it, but I'd hate to waste the WHOLE bottle. More sour cherries, to counteract the sweetness of the whole thing? (I'm definitely thinking that WAY too much sugar is a big part of the problem.)

If I decide to start over, does anyone have a really good recipe for this sort of infused vodka/cordial? Many thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
