OK, we have had our discussion of the RFT poll. Well, the results from the Sauce Cafe's poll is better -- because it splits out the chains from the locals-- but it is still somewhat uneven, IMHO.
By the way, no links are available ofr the results yet.
Here are some of the thoughts that I had:
Best Service: Tony's. Well no kidding.
Best Casual: Blueberry Hill's. Fun place but the food is terrible.
Best Local Brewery. Kind of astounding that Anheuser Busch finish second to Schlafly's. Trailhead and Morgan Street aren't that bad.
Best BBQ: I now have a few places to try. Phil's, Mama's Coal Pot, Charlotte's rib. I thought having Smokin' Al's as second is a travesty. I went and ordered ribs. I couldn't cut through the sinew with the chintzy plastic knife they gave me. it was nasty.
Best Burger: Need to check out O'Connell's and Carl's Drive In. I thought the Fatted Calf was mediocre at best.
Best Chinese: I need to check out House of Wong. I thought LuLu's and Royal Chinese BBQ are heads and shoulders above Happy China and Yen Ching. I am hoping this isn't a reflection of the lack of Chinese sophistication here in St. Louis.
Best Deli: Kopperman's? That is weird. I am partial to Proetzel's.
Best German: Can we get somebody new for German cuisine?
Best Greek: I had a terrible meal at Olympias. I ordered a sampler and I had to send the whole dang thing back becaue they hadn't nuked it long enough. The rice was frozen solid and the dolmades were soggy and cold to the touch. I would even go to Spiros even before Olympia. Michaels is so much better, although not as complete a menu.
Best Indian: Priyaa is much much better than any of the others. House of India never ever showed me decent service. I always get seated next to the bathroom because I usually go by myself. When I turned down that table, they looked at me like I was crazy. I prefer India's Rasoi over Inida Palace and House of India.
Best Sushi: I would have demurred with Nobu's, except that I just a sublime Toro nigiri there a month ago. C'est magnifique.
Best Korean: I gotta try U City Grill.
Best Mexican: I like every one of the choices except for Chuy Arzola's. The food is terrible, the salsa is canned tomato paste. And where is Pueblo Nuevo.
Best Middle Easter: Saleem wins by default. they're the only sit down middle eastern in town.
Best Pizza: Gotta try Blackthorn's.
Best Seafood: I think Bristol's is riding on their reputation.
Best Steak: I got a gift certificate for Citizen kanes. its time to check it out. But where is the Charcoal House on this list?
Best Thai: I think the King and I is the least of all the Thai places in town.
Any comments on:
Chris Pancake House, Meriwether's.
And where is Hartford Coffee House?
