For you NY cooks, I'd like to recount in brief a lovely shopping morning in the Village. We'd intended to go to WF in Chelsea, but made an initial detour to Murrays (I hate to buy cheese at WF b/c many of the prices are unmarked and they are quite expensive). It was 11 am, we got a metered parking spot on 7th Ave., and went to Murray's. Wonderfully uncrowded and bought some lovely cheeses, including a raw milk camembert.
Then went to Wild Edibles down the street and bought some amazing cod, wild salmon and shrimp from a lovely sales clerk who put them on ice for us. Then to Faicco for some bacon. By this point, I had no interest in heading up to WF, despite the great deal on their sparkling water. So, drove up 6th Ave. to Citarella, but went to Jefferson Market instead to buy vegetables, some dairy products and short ribs. Hadn't been there since I lived in the Village in the early 90s - it was wonderful, the owner was incredibly friendly, and offered to deliver to us in Carnegie Hill any time. I was impressed with the reasonableness of the prices and the quality of the meat/produce. Look forward to doing this again soon.
