satguru, rockaway blvd, queens

howler | Oct 14, 201112:07 PM

on the way to the airport, the driver took me by satguru, a punjabi sweet shop/vegetarian restaurant on rockaway blvd about two minutes from the van wyck expressway. alas, they were closed (they stop serving by 7.00 pm), but this could be the holy grail.

too often, vegetarian dishes are afterthoughts in the standard punjabi/moghlai menu. but hindu punjabi vegetarian cooking is an utter joy, and as with all indian regional cooking,is really the best measure of a cooks soul.

on offer, if the driver is to believed, are all the classics, freshly made: pakore, chaat, sarson ka saag, maki di roti, chole bhature, alu gobi, home made rotis, mutter panir, kali daal ..... if true, what an amazing place this must be.

i know i'm going back there next time i'm in town (hopefully next week). fingers crossed.
