Santa Monica Produce Market

Joan Winston | Dec 25, 200104:53 PM

For the past 15 years or so I've been going to the Wednesday Santa Monica Produce Market on Second Street and Arizona. I thought I'd share some of my favorite stands with my fellow chowhounds. I always park in the lot on Santa Monica and enter the market on 2nd. The second stand on the left as you're walking north is an excellent mushroom man, who has all kinds of wild mushrooms, depending upon the season. A couple of stands up is an herb guy who also has great salad greens. Next is Throgmartin Farms, where DeeDee sells garlic, shallots and onions. Her shallots are enormous. At the northwest corner of 2nd and Arizona are the best tomatoes in the market, imo. They're called Premium's and they have them almost every week of the year. Continuing up 2nd, north of Arizona, (on the left or west side of the street) is a lady who makes gouda cheese, mild, medium and sharp. Next to her are fresh organic eggs, and next to that on the same side is Polito Brothers where I buy delicious valencia oranges. This is getting too long, so I'll continue some other time. (Amazingly long lasting cut flowers, tiny haricots verts, big fat sweet carrots, etc.)
