I'm coming in on the Auto-Train, and will then be traveling in my car from Sanford down to Fort Myers. I haven't decided my route yet, but could be persuaded to take a particular route if it involved some outstanding eats.
I will need breakfast in Sanford, and want good home-style food -- esp. biscuits, gravy, home-made sausage, real stone-ground grits. The train arrives at 9 a.m., but I think it takes a while to get my car off the train. So, I need a place that serves breakfast until they serve lunch.
I will probably need a late-lunch spot in Sanford for the return trip -- where I have to check-in by 3 pm for boarding the Auto-Train back. I like great Reuben sandwiches, but that may be a stretch.
So, help me plan my trip by suggesting your "best of" the list I mentioned -- in Sanford and on the route to Fort Myers -- and any other suggestions of really "special" things I shouldn't miss. (I don't want fried tilapia, or frozen fish, of course. What is the local "fish" -- and not catfish, either -- that is in fish shacks these days? Can grouper still be fished commercially?). For BBQ I like more vinegar-based East Carolina style pulled pork vs. pork with really sweet sauces.
(PS, On the way back, I may be traveling from Ocala over to Sanford for my return trip, so if you have any ideas for lunch on that route, I'd appreciate it).
PPS, Does anyone know what kind of food & beverage are available on the Auto-Train?
