San Rafael: Royal Franks - over a dozen sausages and Salvadoran food

No, not the old Royal Franks.

Reading yelp, it seems that while the hot dogs are fine, the Salvadoran food is the star here. There are only pupusas on the overhead menu boards, but there is a specials board so there might be some dishes there. Someone said the Salvadoran tamales were good.

I went for the Chicago-style dog. The bun had poppyseed but was more of s sub roll. Not being from Chicago and a purist I rather liked that bun. The dog was plump and juicy, but probably not Vienna. The relish wasn't neon, but there is a shaker of celery salt on the condiment table that you can add to any frank.

Actually you could order a regular hot dog and just help yourself to the condiment tray and build your own Chicago dog ... or anything else. There are seven squeeze bottles with different mustards and special sauce.

The sausaages included Polish, Italian, Bratwurst (smoked or white), chorizo, longania, garlic sausage, corn dogs, hot links, various turkey and chicken franks. The turkey chipotle cilantro frank sounded interesting.

The crazy dog has kraut, mayo, jalepenos, tomato, onions, mustard and cheese.

There are a few sandwiches, salads and a gyro on the menu. From the one yelp report, the gyro can probably be skipped.

There was lively Latin music playing, the owner had an accent and there were pupusas on the menu. So I asked if he was Salvadoran. He was.

After telling him I spent a hot two seconds in El Salvador this year he started talking about great places for pupusas in El Salvador. Should you find yourself in that country, here's where he suggested

This summer I THOUGHT I saw the Royal Franks sign while driving down 4th Street. The next time I just found Sol Food in the old location, so I figured they had just painted over the old sign. This Royal Franks is right next door to Falafel Hut.

I don't know if we are supposed to link to yelp or not, but this review is one of the best and funniest I've seen on that site. What is so good about it is that it actually captures the place pretty well
