For last week's final game of the World Series, I joined friends for beer and viewing at the Castro's Lucky 13, a neighborhood bar. Cash only, it's known for its selection of taps. Pliny the Elder for me, and the regular sitting at the bar told me I was lucky to get it as PTE usually runs dry by Wednesday.

A newly minted Cubbies fan after my recent trip to Chicago http://www.chowhound.com/post/side-st... , our group's vocal support earned scowls from the Cleveland partisans in the crowd at Lucky 13. At the 7th inning stretch with our team firmly ahead at 6-3, we decided to set off in search of eats and a friendlier locale to celebrate the victory ahead. A few minutes and not far away, we walked into ABV and were horrified to see the score tied up.

ABV was packed, standing room only at this point. A nod to the patient staff who understood when I declined to order a drink immediately, saying I was too nervous to make a decision. Eventually I did get the Quicksand, $11, blending mezcal with quina, dry curacao and orange bitters for a beautifully balanced cocktail. A table opened up in the back, but we opted to stay in the front room to see the TV screen.

During the rain delay, we figured that we might be here for awhile and started to order more food in earnest stress eating. The crowd thinned and some counter space opened up. Notable bites were the Fried cauliflower, Grilled octopus with steak fries, the famous Pimento cheese burger (yes, it's still on the menu for now), and my favorite of all, Falafel lamb dogs. The lamb dogs come two to an order for $9. I'd describe them as the marriage of a chickpea version of corn dog to a spicy hot seekh kabob served with cooling tzatziki for incorporating the fried, salty, spicy elements that make a great bar snack. Also highly recommended, the Oloroso ice cream sandwich reported on here, http://www.chowhound.com/post/favorit... . The chicken tacos were not so memorable and I did not taste the shrimp spring roll.

The Cubs dramatic win made for a historic night and a memorable bar crawl.
