San Diego: El Agave

David A, | Nov 3, 2003 09:13 AM

Following Hound advice, I had stopped in at El Agave while in San Diego for the week. I was a bit disappointed. My sister and I split the appetizer platter, which includes a small taste of everything. I thought it was tasteless and heavy across the board; the taquitos were definitely inferior to those I'd been eating all week at the Roberto's outlet at Mission Beach. For main courses, following the advice of the waiter, we had the red mole with chicken and the black mole with pork. The sauces were good, but both dishes were so rich and heavy that they left us feeling a bit sick. The corn tortillas which came with the meal were pretty lame; very dry with no real flavor. I would not say that the meal was bad, but it definitely was not what I expected from what is supposed to be one of San Diego's premier Mexican restaurants. The best Mexican food I've ever had, strangely, remains a little place called Taco Morelos in Minneapolis, of all places. Tacos Morelos served the best corn tortillas I've ever had: incredibly fragrant, wonderfully moist. They were probably loaded with fat, but who cared.
