Koji's on vacation (Tokiwa) and we had a sushi urge, so we decided to try Saito at Park and Barnard. What a disaster!
We started out asking for edamame, only to find out that no one knew what we were talking about. Our waiter proceded to explain the 2 for 1 specials, which were pre-selected pieces of sushi and maki in different combinations. When I asked if we could order off a menu he advised that there was a 35% discount if we did. He repeated this three times. I know I'm hard of hearing, but I got the message on the third attempt. Of course, when we paid our bill, we were advised that it was a 25% discount.... go figure.
Anyway, as we sat at the bar, we saw them pulling out pre-prepared maki and slicing off pieces to put on the 2 for 1 special plates. We were glad we didnt' order that. I looked a little closer, and noticed that they had containers of pre-pressed rice cubes that they were using to make the sushi.... and all the fish was pre-sliced. :(
Our selections came out... at three different times. No one bothered to explain what they were serving us, and we couldn't match up the offerings to what we had ordered. For example, we ordered a "chefs roll" which was supposed to be made with eel. After the 3rd serving, we had no eel. I asked about this, and, after much comotion, I was advised that they made a substitution, because they were out of eel, but they could make some eel sushi for me if I wanted !!!! Made absolutely no sense to me.... We figured that less than half of what we ordered was consistent with the description on the menu...
I guess the bottom line is always taste and, well, it was one small step above supermarket sushi. Thank goodness Koji will be back on Tuesday!
