saigon flavor in torrance - review

I was craving pho the other day but not feeling a drive to westminster, long beach, or even gardena... so I stopped it at the new-ish place at Crenshaw and Carson, Saigon Flavor.

The first thing to hit me was that the decor was really bad (lucite and glass furniture, black linoleum floor, etc.) but I guess they are trying to create a slight more upscale vibe than your typical pho counter. The prices are a bit high, but it's probably just the neighborhood... and the menu is kind of catered to caucasian tastes - instead of the endless meat and size combinations that most places have I think there were only eight or so options. I got the pho tai.

Gotta say it was decent bowl of soup and definitely way better than any of the other options in the immediate area! The broth had a good flavor and there was a good-size portion of meat. I actually slurped down all the broth before I got through all the stuff in the soup. The plate of herbs only came with basil, bean sprouts, and lime, but there were thinly sliced jalapenos in the soup already.

So though they know who their customer is, I would say that this is an authentic family-run place... They also have bun, banh xeo, broken rice dishes, and banh mi... I'll have to try those sometime later though my hopes aren't too high for the banh mi since good banh mi really requires a high level of turnover...

Like I said it wasn't really the cheap lunch that I was shooting for, the pho + iced coffee + tip put me out 12 bucks, but that said I'm sure I'll be back. If you're in the neighborhood check it out...
