Sahag's Very Good Basturma

kevin | Jul 8, 2003 11:42 PM

Just tried me some basturma sandwiches. and it was quite good. very spicy, assertive cold cut served on a nice french roll that's toasted w/tomato, onions, maybe some sliced pickles, and some garlic paste. also, came w/ some pickled turnips (the kind that always goes w/ falafel or shwerma orders at israeli/arab restaurants), some jalapenos, and some cured mediterranean olives that are almost gamy in their intensity. definitely some good eats. and only four bucks for the whole shebang. also, came w/ a chocolate macaroon for dessert. the market also has some nice goodies like packaged mixed nuts, dates, candies, apricot fruit-rolls and other dried fruits, and of course the deli case w/ basturma by the pound to go, along with armenian sausage, and other goods plus haloumi cheese from cypress. defintiely one of those chowhound finds. a special thanks should go out to jgold and thi for the recommendation. maybe next time i'll take a few pounds of the basturma home w/ me. it's basically the armenian answer to salami.

Sunset near Normandie, it's in a little mini-mall.
