i tend to be a bit dubious when trying out restaurants in the OC area.. not that i was expecting sage to be a perfect experience but honestly, the food was extremely subpar. while the menu read seemingly simple and yummeriffic, the actual dishes were beyond a great disappointment. even the milk (no wine since it was a short lunch break) i ordered tasted like a mixture of non-fat and low-fat. the sage burger was charred and dry and the bread bun used only made this even less edible, the mushroom risotto was the WORST risotto i have had to this date (which is saying lots since i've had my share of bad risotto). the whole thing was just an awful mess with a consistency no different than porridge. the mushrooms looked like large chunks of stringy beef. everything else was less of a shocking disappointment, but not by much.
so then how about the service? well, the busboys and servers were nice enough, but gawd i have never seen such slow people before. 3 ppl in our party ordered the sage burger but only the last patron was asked how he'd like his burger cooked and which two sides he'd like... who knows what they would've served us had i not tagged a server down later... do they just do "eeny meeny miny mo??" then.. i had to ask 3 different ppl for a straw, and finally, after 10-15 mins, 2 of them came a second apart, each with 3 straws.
the only possibly salvaging factor was the cute, quaint atmosphere of the place.
please.. don't throw your well-deserving moola at this solidly lacking restaurant. how they have a second location - i don't get.
