Sad news for Ontario Peach Farmers and Canadian chowhounds

phoenikia | Mar 13, 2008 07:47 AM

CanGro, owned by Florida-based Sun Capital Partners since Kraft sold CanGro 2 years ago, has decided to close the Niagara peach processing plant and outsource fruit from China. CanGro is also closing a vegetable processing plant in Exeter. CanGro's brands include Del Monte and Aylmer.

Del Monte peaches are going to be imported from China. The Del Monte pears already are imported from China.

The Peach Farmers in the following article will probably have to rip out 40 acres of peach trees they planted in 2004 because there are no other peach processors in the area.

A grape juice plant and maraschino cherry plant have also recently closed in Niagara.

Let's hope they don't mess with Aylmer tomatoes.
