After seeing jazz great Sonny Rollins at SummerStage in Central Park last night (excellent performance by the way), I went to a small place on the Upper West Side (Amsterdam and 82nd)I have been meaning to try that is called Sabor. It has gotten good reviews in a number of publications, but the restaurant itself is so unassuming that I have never been there before despite the fact that it is just around the corner from where I live.
Sabor is primarily a tapas style restaurant. So my companion and I ordered a number of small dishes. A couple we only okay, but there were some definite standouts. The chorizo there was first rate as was the goat cheese empanada. The lobster quesadilla was excellent also. As you can tell, this place does not just serve "traditional" tapas food. Sabor also had some great Mojitos.
Overall, Sabor was not superb but it was much better than average and relatively economical too (total bill with tax, tip and 4 Mojitos was under 70 dollars).
The decor of the restaurant is nothing special, but last night at least, the place was packed and had a lot of energy. It seems like a great place to take a group of good friends or a high energy date. Best of all for me, it is just around the corner!
