RW Sandrines

horrible | Aug 26, 2004 04:21 PM

RW dinner at Sandrines last night.

Showed up for our 8:30 reservation and the place was already 75% full. Seated promptly at a 2 top in the center of the room, it seemed that everyone was ordering the RW menu.

Apps:
Frissee salad w/ cherry tomato's and Maytag Blue cheese
or
Lobster Bisque

Entrees:
1/2 of a 1 and 1/4 lb chlled lobster w/ mixed vegetables (sorry don't remember the details)

Grilled Marinated Pork Medallions
Pommes frites drizzled with fresh roasted garlic herb vinaigrette.

Ravioli du jour (mushroom)

Dessert:
Chocolate Choux puffs w/ white chocolate creme

My friend went with the salad and pork frites. I wasn't too excited by the options and went with the Choucroute Garnie ($29). We also split an Alsatian blend (alsace one). They did have a Merlot and a Pinot Blanc for 30.04 in honor of Restaurant Week.

Bread (seemed like iggy's rasin loaf and baguette) came quickly followed by the wine and salad.

Tasted everything
salad, nice but nothing special. I'm a sucker for a good blue though.

grilled pork, grilled very well and the frites sopped up the nice sauce. The sauce for the pork was very good herbal-cilantro flavours and a little sweet. The portions was on the small side but I saw better portions walking by later. Just bad luck on our part.

The choucrout was very good, and huge. three sausages, a smoked pork chop (awesome) and a ham hock. All piled up on a nice sauerkraut. The sausages were nice. My companion didn't care for them though. Pretty average german sausage medly. Sorry no name. The smoked pork chop was great. I don't know if it was brined too but it had a great cross between port and ham, with the added smoky flavor. Good stuff. Ham hock was a nice touch but mostly fat and skin. I did manage to pry out a few tasty nuggets of tasty porkyness here and there but by then I was stuffed and loosing interest. Way too much food on this dish.

The dessert was pretty dissapointing. They must have been making a ton of these chocolate choux puffs and this batch was very salty and doughy inside. No chocolate tast at all. The white chocolate cream was nice but didn't redeem the dish.

Good coffee (ille) althoug my partner though it tasted like cigarettes (don't ask me?). But they were 3.75, it's a pet peeve of mine when restaurants charge a ton for regular coffee.

Total: ~$100 + $20 tip

The regualr menu seems very pricey for the quality. apps $10-$21 Entrees $29-$38
Nice place, but I probably wouldn't go back.

NB: they have a regular prixe fixe for $29 for the rest of the year. The menu looks almost the same online.
