Russo's Watertown, Best Produce & More in Mass. (longish)

I have to say I was a late comer to Russo's. It has been an institution on the Watertown / Waltham line for years and the location is just so wierd, that I really just started going there in the last year or two...

That said, they just did a major refurb and tripled the space. Someone mentioned it on chowhound recently but I figured I had to do a full on write-up because the place is just so amazing!

For starters here is the address:

560 Pleasant Street
Watertown MA
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 8AM-8PM; Sun. 8AM-6PM

Now for the juice. IMHO the best produce in Eastern Mass. period. And the prices are excellent.

They have a very respectable selection of Asian and Latin greens and root vegtables that are even fresher then the chinatown locations. Prices are nearly as inexpensive too.

They also have just about every type of produce you could possibly want. Can't even name them all but here are a few:
- 6 varieties of eggplants including baby green thai ones.
- 10 varieties of immaculate fresh hot peppers.
- Gobs of nicely priced citrus
- Things I have never heard of, and that is an accomplishment.
- Kale, collards, 3 kinds of chard, and every other green you could imagine.

Let me also say that as part of their new expansion they added prepared foods, fresh pasta made on premises, a huge cheese section and a bakery with great breads and pastries that I have not had a chance to try yet.

I did pick up some very nice Jamon Serrano, quite reasonable at $15/lb that I am going to try for lunch today.

Did I mention the good selection of VERY reasonably priced flowers?

Okay, I guess I am excited about this place. Run, don't walk to Russo's and check it out for yourself.

I take back what I said earlier, it is not just the best produce store, but quite frankly I think it is the best food store in Eastern Mass.

I hope they get the critical mass to keep it up with the new prepared foods, bakery, and cheese section.

Would love to hear from other hounds who have had a chance to check out stuff I have not mentioned.
