Just came back from St. Petersburg, Russia and had a great time. The food was terrific -- after having been warned that I would find nothing to eat, I found it just the opposite, with excellent Russian and Georgian food. Pigged out on bliny, caviar, vodka, kebabs, grilled vegetables with walnut paste, smoked fish, even excellent beef stroganof.
I never had Georgian food before, and found it to be similar to Turkish food in that there were a number of meze-like vegetable dishes. It was interesting that the tables came with salt and paprika shakers (not black pepper).
Anyway, now I am in search of authentic Russian and/or Georgian food, preferably in Manhattan, but for this I'd be willing to travel, I'd guess it would be to Brighton Beach. I'm not looking for the overpriced joints (Firebird, Russian Samovar, etc.) but would rather find the mom and pop places where the natives eat. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
