This stretch through Mokena and Frankfort contains evidence of the towns' German origin and of more recent Italian emigration from Chicago and Chicago Heights. The former: Fleckenstein's Bakery and Chef Klaus' Steak and Seafood Cafe, which replaced his burned down Der Bier Stube. The latter: pizzerias and an Italian deli in strip malls, and Enrico's restaurant at the NE corner of Rts. 45 and 30. I'm only familar with Enrico's. Has anyone tried the other places?
Enrico's serves consistently above-average southern Italian in a family atmosphere. We ate well there last evening. The tomatoes and basil on the bruschetta were fresh, my linguine was not overcooked, and the sausage and black olive regular-crust pizza was especially tasty, perhaps due to good-quality cheese.
