Recently I tried Rong Bien Family Style Restaurant in San Jose. It's one of the larger sit-down places in the front of the Grand Century Shopping Mall. It has a separate entrance and stays open longer than the mall hours.
I'd heard that the Vietnamese style live lobster preps were good here. But the night I was in, the smallest lobster available was 2.5 pounds at $22 per pound, too big for me to tackle as a single diner. This points to the specialty of the house which are set family style menus. Yes, there are noodle dishes and lunch time rice plates suited for individual diners, but most of the menu is devoted to lists of entrees in set price menus for family groups.
I wound up ordering the catfish in caramel sauce in clay pot, $11.95. It was pretty good, not as complex as the best, but better than average. There was no charge for the steamed rice on the side, and a dish of pandan ice cream at the end was complimentary too.
Has anyone tried this place?
